Topeka's Rail Heritage 44
ON THE BACK COVER
Welcome to a good evening's read. This is a charming historical snapshot of the capital city of Topeka, Kansas, and its railroad heritage going back to the early years of the 20th century. The author, a committed railfan from early childhood, shares his fascination with railroads and the impact of the rail industry on a town like Topeka.
Because of his father's official capacity with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Gibson makes many references to that railroad. But he includes memories of all the railroads serving the community - the Missouri Pacific, the Rock Island and the Union Pacific. Among his reminesces are yard activities, locomotive maintenance operations, railway mail service, train wrecks, unclaimed freight, the Fred Harvey restaurant, "doodlebugs" and farm exhibit trains. Adding to the charm are digressions about Topeka's experience with its street railway system, theater opportunities and the traveling circus.
All in all, this book adds to one's sense of the history of Topeka and a by-gone railroad era.
