Introduction
Forget about the 20s, 30s - even the 50s. Right now is the Golden Age of Toy Trains. There's more toy train action today than at any other time in history. That's why we're doing this guide and that's why we've started to document the production of the various companies producing items for the toy train enthusiast. Better now, when things are fresh, then later, when memories fade, the principals may be gone and records may be lost.
Our plan is to include, in future editions of this 3-Rail Guide, all companies producing items of interest to toy train enthusiasts. That includes manufacturers of all types of trains and accessories. And by accessories, we don't mean just items used to dress up a layout. That broad category may include a list of Angela Thomas paintings or neon clocks with the Lionel logo  anything that may be of interest to the toy train enthusiast.
We want our 3-Rail Guide to become an indispensible buyer's resource for every toy train enthusiast.
In this first edition, we cover twelve manufacturers. They include Weaver, T-Reproductions, Williams, MTH, Eastwood, Layout Miniatures, Pride Lines, Marx Trains, 3rd Rail, Bowser, Rich-Art and Corgi. Our sources include the founders of the various companies and/or their top assistants, knowledgeable collectors and dealers, periodicals, catalogs, and our own sightings at train meets around the country.
We will publish two price guides a year. Our Lionel guide will be released every October and our 3-Rail Guide will be released every April. The next 3-Rail Guide will include updates on most of the companies included in this first edition, plus new chapters on companies such as Crown Model Products, Petersen Supply Co., and we hope, K-Line.
We intended to include K-Line in this first edition but decided against it after receiving a letter from M. Toler Workman, Esq., a lawyer for K-Line. M. Toler suggested that we not include K-Line products in this guide ("K-Line demands that you immediately remove any and all direct and indirect references to K-Line and its products and that you immediately cease and desist all distribution of any information...concerning K-Line.") and if we failed to comply with his suggestion (K-Line will avail itself of all its legal rights and remedies against you."), we might be invited to court.
While we felt M. Toler's demands had a weak legal basis, we did not wish to spend the money, time and effort required to get involved in a legal skirmish with M. Toler. Besides, my daddy always told me to avoid guys who use an initial for their first name and put an "Esq." after their last name.
K-Line's unenlightened posturing is rather puzzling. All the other manufacturers viewed being included as a benefit and helped in any way they could (providing catalogs, proof reading, etc.). K-Line is a major player and their production should be documented. Unfortunately, those who lose are the many K-Line collectors who are eager to read an objective and authoriative guide on K-Line products. The best way to produce such a guide is for K-Line to cooperate with the publisher. K-Line's input combined with the input of expert collectors will result in the best guide.
