THE FIRST EDITION of this book appeared in 1946 and was the first fully-bound book published by Ian Allan. Since then it has gone through four editions. This fifth edition, published to coincide with the Company's Silver Jubilee, stresses the astonishing changes which have taken place on British railways over a period of little more than twenty years. To-day, though speeds in general are far higher, with the gradual disappearance of steam power much of the romance that attached to the famous named trains of the past has vanished.
In the first edition 70 titled trains were described. In the present edition there are over 120 titles, but of these 66-more than half-are no longer in use, and in a number of cases the trains concerned, some of them in the past quite famous services, have ceased to run.
Nevertheless this book provides an unique record of all past and present titled trains and as such is a valuable reference book as well as a source of nostalgia to railway historians.
