TIMETABLE TRAINS
Timetables in the golden age of rail travel were passports to business meetings, family visits and vacation adventures. More than just schedules, they were a panorama of available accommodations, ticket prices, baggage restrictions, optional routes, connections to buses, planes and boats, and even what was served in the dining car. Railroads regarded them as portable salesmen, to be picked off wooden racks in hotel lobbies and ticket offices. They were the traveler's friend, in pocket or purse, to answer questions and fulfill plans. And perhaps, in years after, to bring back memories.
What is in this book has been taken from the author's 1979 publication, Timetable Treasury, which is now out of print. These pages are a reflection of another time, when trains ran everywhere, often with names that capture our imagination. Fortunate indeed were those who had tickets to be on board.
