WOODSTOCK is fortunate, photographically speaking, for more than most New England villages, it has been recorded from almost the very inception of modern photography. This dates from 1851, when an Englishman, Scott Archer, devised the wet-collodian glass plate process.
Only three years later, some unknown photographer with his massive equipment stood in the Square in Woodstock and took the picture which appears on pages 8 and 9. We know this photograph was taken before the 4th of July, 1854, because on that day the courthouse, the white tower of which appears in the background, burned to the ground.
What is of even greater interest is that this original glass negative, and some three hundred others have, over the years, been collected and are now catalogued and preserved in the Woodstock Historical Society. It is to this organization and the assistance of its Executive Director, Mrs. Raymond Leonard, and Senior Hostess Miss Clara Richardson that we are indebted for making this book possible. We are deeply grateful.
It will be apparent to those who know Woodstock that there are many omissions in the photographic record: one of the most obvious examples is the D.A.R. house on the Green. The reason for such omissions is simple. To date, the old pictures, although they may still exist, have not come to light.
