A novel of the present, "The Tim-ber Beast" is the story of a hard-boiled old logging operator, his sons, and his attractive and restless young second wife. Charlie Dow belongs to the tough, colorful old days of honkey-tonks and windjammers in Port Townsend and Puget Sound. There is a full-blooded picture of that wild, adventurous, wasteful time, but most of the story takes place today-and the reader feels that this new world, too, is immensely alive but too precious for loss or waste.
The growing attraction between one of Dow's sons and his young stepmother leaves no slack in the emotional tension. And there are scenes of breathless excitement in the struggle between the forthright Dow and the smooth business partner who intends to squeeze him out of business. The outcome is in-tensely dramatic; indeed, the whole narrative is one of tight-holding action, and yet with many passages of exquisite scenic evocation, and fully drawn, vividly individualized characters. Between the "cut over and get out" philosophy of the "timber beast" and the new ideas of his sons there is a world of difference. With these two brilliantly contrasted worlds, the novel becomes also a meaningful, perceptive story of the growth of the Pacific Northwest.
