DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The industry in the interior, which today turns out more than 70 percent of BC's forest products, got underway during the gold rushes of the mid-1800s when the first loggers cut trees for sluice boxes and mine timbers. It boomed again with the coming of the trans-Canada railway-which required 3,000 ties for every mile of track, and opened up hungry prairie markets for B( lumber. Since then, BC's interior forest industry ha; been essential to the economic health of the province.
Tie Hackers to Timber Harvesters tells the whole story, from the days when mammoth trees were cut by hand with axes and adzes and hauled out of the woods on giant horse-drawn sleighs or sent downstream on great river drives, to the development of sawmills and pulpmills, to the use of trains and trucks, to the present day when trees are cut, delimbed and bucked to size in seconds with computerized machines.
Meticulously researched by a former logger and award-winning writer, Tie Hackers to Timber Harvesters includes more than 200 historical photographs and scores of oral histories from the loggers, millworkers, policy-makers and entrepreneurs who made the industry what it is.
