Drawing an imaginary line to connect Norfolk, VA to Richmond, VA to Ra, NC and back to Norfolk, describes a Tidewater Triangle in which railroading once flourished under the banners of about a dozen great lines. Within this triangle, the Tidewater-bound, coal conveyor mainlines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Norfolk & Western are crossed by the Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line and Southern System lines enroute to their southerly destinations. Throw in some homegrown shortlines like the Norfolk Franklin & Danville, the Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line, and the Norfolk Southern Railway, along with penetraby the Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac and the Penn Central, and you have the makings of a virtual plethof railroad activity. Add to this a time frame of 1966-1969, when the rails bore 20 car Florida streamliners and FM roadswitchers with equal everyday aplomb, and the opportunity presents itself for some splendid railphotography. This is Tidewater Triangle: 1960's diesel railroading at its best!
