I know what blowing out shots are like... a great deal of coal dust is made to rise. I have seen a blowing out shot sometimes extend in flame about ten feet from the face.

I have read about coal dust being explosive. This I say theoretically as I have no practical knowledge of it.

In the crosscut 850 feet below the surface, the second shot was fired at 5:55 p.m. A blower of great magnitude shot out of the hole which was drilled at such an angle that the flame travelled well up the crosscut and into the slope before it hit the roof. The roof was filled with coal dust. The air was full of dust too, dust made extremely dry by the ventilation and suspended in the air by the force of the current and the impact of the shot. The flame and concussion of the blast that followed travelled up the slope, fed by gas trapped above the timbers and in the stalls....
One hundred forty-eight men died that third day of May, 1887. The majority of victims were buried following a mass funeral. Among the hundreds of mourners at the cemetery was a young boy holding tightly to his father's hand. John Sampson Freethy watched as a man on horseback met the coffin-laden wagons as they approached the graveyard, each driver giving the rider a list of names, which he carried at a gallop back to the mourners waiting by the holes dug in the green sod and the black earth....
There was hardly a family untouched by the disaster. Almost everyone in town had a son or a son-in-law or an uncle or a father among the dead. Because of the common practice of two brothers or a father and a son working together in teams, some families were hit several times over. John Woobank and his son Copley; Henry Lee and his son Hudson; the two William Lukeys; David and Arther Ellis; brothers William and James Davey and Robert and John Stove all died side by side.
