The story of the Southern Pacific's cab forward locomotives with sketch biographies of their inventors, and the adoption of this type of steam engine by the Southern Pacific.
For over forty years the cab forward locomotive was the workhorse of the Southern Pacific's mountain divisions, finally recording its presence over most of the Pacific System. Built to eliminate the smoke and gas problem in tunnels and snow-sheds and to generally improve visibility from a long-boilered steam locomotive, the cab forward provided the SP with a most utilitarian road engine, attested to by the fact that the road employed 256 such locomotives.
This book provides engineering details, construction features, performance, a detailed roster and a pictorial presentation of unique detail and comprehensiveness. Photographs show the articulateds in all their haunts and habitats during their illustrious operative years, taking them down to the time of ultimate scrapping - and, in the case of one, preservation for posterity in the California State Historic Railroad Museum.
