This Fascinating Railroad Business By Robert Henry Hard Cover Copyright 1942, 1943 520 Pages Index SECOND EDITION REVISED
This book is about the business of railroading, from top to bottom, the whole range.
The fascination is in its pages. In the day by day and every day flow of cars to and from every corner of this continent there are movement color and life; back of it there are thought, planning, imagination and coordinated effort; through it all there is the fascination of a great and essential job well and smoothly dune; a task essential in of peace, vital to our security in I hue of war.
Many things work together in the business of railroading. The whole thing is founded on the combination of track, which supports the load and smooths the way; flanged wheels, which cause trains of cars to follow the path of the rails; and power, which, because of the other two, is able to accomplish more on the railroad than on any other surface known to man. This combination of rail, train and power makes possible the unique contribution of the railroad to modern production and distribution - the low-cost mass transportation on which it all depends.
Though primarily about the hundreds of present-day companies large and small which operate the railroads of the United States, this book reveals as well something of the history of railroads something of the experimentation and pioneering which have been done in the past, and something about railroads all over the world. There is a most significant chapter, for example, on the strategic part which railways play in time of war. It is about the many different kinds and classes of railway men who run the business, about the tracks, the signals, the shops, the rolling stock, and how they are all used.
It is not a treatise on the nature and workings of railroad appliances, apparatus and methods. The effort is to present railroads from the viewpoint of the layman interested in the fascinating facts behind the trains that go by, or of the railroad man who is interested not just in his own part of the performance but in the business as a whole.
