SECTION 1.
Drawings are the universal language of the engineer. They are the sign language, so to speak, by which the engineer can place his ideas on paper in permanent form, so that they can be transmitted to the office or the shop, or kept on file for future reference.
A working drawing shows the details of work to be performed; it gives the mechanic the design, dimensions and drawing of his work on a picture plane. (A picture plane is a flat surface on which all lines of a picture are drawn.)

SECTION 18.
In Section 14 of the preceding lesson a description was given of dimension and extension lines, which are frequently used in showing dimensions on a drawing.
While the dash and dot line is the standard line that draftsmen are supposed to use in putting dimensions on a drawing, nevertheless many draftsmen use a light, solid line for this purpose. Generally speaking there will be no difficulty in recognizing which are dimension lines on a drawing, even though the light, solid line is used instead of the dash and dot line.

All pictures are of the actual item.  There may be reflection from the lights in some photos.   We try to take photos of any damage.    If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.  Please email with questions.
