THERE have been many attacks on Medicare, but few on the doctors who have taken advantage of it.
In a report submitted to Congress by former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Wilbur Cohen as he left office last month, it was revealed that 47 doctors collected at least $50,000 a year from Medicare.
Topping the list was a general practitioner in Florida who collected $191,000 in Medicare fees in a 12-month period - a long cry from the old family GP who died With half the neighborhood in his debt.
Some of the others who collected substantial fees from the fund in a year's time were: a Florida urologist, $132,000; a Georgia surgeon, $131,000; another Florida GP (maybe Florida should be re-named the Golden State), $120,000; and a Texas eye specialist, $99,000.
In addition, 34 received from $50,000 to $74,000 and six others collected between $75,000 and $98,000.
Cohen's survey resulted from a decision to do a nationwide check on doctors collecting $50,000 a year or more from Medicare. The computers, which were handed the job to do, came up with 128 accounts, but 81 of these were found to be clinics or groups of doctors, leaving 47 individuals.
Twelve of the 47 were general practitioners - the old family doctor. Commenting, Medicare Director Thomas M. Tierney said, "I don't understand how a general practitioner can collect $100,000 a year, but you can't make a judgment until you know what is behind it."
