IN VIEW OF the withdrawal of President L. B. Johnson from the coming election - and the resulting complex political situation - we believe you should have the benefit of the thinking of the AFL-CIO.
The following message from AFL-CIO President George Meany was sent to Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey urging him to run for President on the Democratic ticket. The vice president has been a friend of labor and our Brotherhood through thick and thin over the years. Here is the text of Brother Meany's message:
We deeply regret the decision of President Johnson not to seek re-nomination. We have long supported the President; we have hailed the splendid legislative record of his Administration; we have respected and admired his steadfastness and courage in the defense of freedom and in the search for an honorable, durable basis for world peace and order.
Now the President has decided not to seek re-election in order that no one misread or misunderstand his actions in the pursuit of peace in the world and progress at home.
We had looked forward to the opportunity to support his candidacy as President of the United States.
We are convinced the American people would have supported him, despite the unfair, unremitting, unconscionable personal attacks upon him. No man - and certainly no President - should have been subjected to such a torrent of abuse from the press and from other politicians - including some in his own party upon whom he was entitled to rely for support, but who instead have cultivated and exploited division and disunity for their personal political advantage.
But the President has made his decision, as courageous and selfless as any in the nation's political history. America therefore must and will accept it.
