Telling the Railway Story 1929 Compliments of the Illinois Central system  A 4 year educational advertising campaign among college and university students, with two essays that won accompanying contests.
Introduction
This booklet represents four years' experience in presenting railway facts and figures to college and university students.
In the four school years beginning in 1925 the Illinois Central System directed a progressively related series of educational advertisements toward the students attending the colleges and universities on its lines. These advertisements are printed in this booklet in the order in which they appeared. They comprise the first thirty-two chapters.
The thirty-third and thirty-fourth chapters consist of the essays which won the grand prizes in two contests conducted by the railroad as part of this educational program. The first contest, held in 1927, drew 321 entries from thirty-nine colleges and universities. The second, held in 1929, drew 309 from forty-six.
The advertisements were published in educational institutions of 4-year college rank or better situated in communities on the Illinois Central System at which student publications issued at least monthly accepted national advertising. Due to various circumstances, the number of institutions reached by this advertising fluctuated to some extent from year to year. The 4-year average was forty-two, and the indicated annual enrollment of this number of colleges and universities averaged 80,000.
The purpose of this advertising program, as stated on page 35 of this booklet, was to lay a groundwork of improved understanding upon which college- and university-trained men and women might base intelligently their attitude toward questions affecting the railroads. That progress has been made toward the attainment of this aim is indicated by the responses which the essay contests have enjoyed, as well as by other testimony which has reached the management of the Illinois Central System from time to time.
