Originally opened in 1882, it ran from Heathfield to Ashton, with a long siding to serve the mine and quarries at Bridford. This was known as the Teign House siding. Another company was later formed to build a line from Exeter, linking up at Christow. The through line was opened in 1904. The Teign Valley line, as it became known, had an importance all its own. In addition to serving some of the needs of the valley, it provided an alternative route from Exeter to Newton Abbot, and was known to carry the main Cornish expresses at such times necessitated by cliff falls and rough seas along the coastal route. It is also reported to have had the honor of sheltering a Royal Train and its passengers for a night, during official visits to Devon.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe end for passenger traffic came in 1958, after a reported loss of ,000 per annum, despite protests by people living along the route whose lifeline it was to Exeter and Newton Abbot.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe branch can still be traced by car in half a day, but the beautiful Teign Valley and hills really justify a full day's outing. The lower section from Heathfield to Dunsford is quite easy to trace from the roads, which are only a matter of yards from the old line. The bridge over the road, close to the site of Dunsford Halt, has now been demolished. The hilly stretches from Dunsford to Ide are more difficult to trace, as the old line is lost to sight for most of the way, as it climbs to Culver Tunnel, Longdown Station and Perridge Tunnel. Its route can be seen from the road through Longdown, and followed closely to Alphington. The old bridge at Alphington has now gone, and all that remains of the line are the sidings from City Basin Junction to the Marsh Barton Industrial Estate.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe line, especially during the years between the two wars, must surely be a modelers paradise, as is shown with outstanding clarity and composition in many of the excellent photographs which I have been fortunate enough to obtain. The cuttings, tunnels, river, bridges, aerial ropeways, small stations, engines, rolling stock, including private owner wagons, all tend to form a superb layout. In many ways, it is the epitome of the country branch line, terminating in the magnificent train hall of Brunelian design at Exeter St. Thomas. I would strongly repudiate Mr. A. A.
