Tehachapi, derived from the Indian word tah-eechay-pah, means land of sweet water and acorns, oaks and springs and to some, a windy place. To us, Tehachapi defines the ultimate railfan photography experience and it is a place about which we are most passionate!
Our first visit to "the mountain" as some refer to Tehachapi Pass, was a last minute decision. In September 2004, we were planning a weeklong visit to California, based in San Francisco. This would be George and Kathy's first visit to California and Kathy's first visit to the West. In addition to scenic and tourist destinations, we added a day to the tour to include Tehachapi. Without much forethought, we got off Route 58 at Bealville and drove down to Caliente. Moments later, the photos of the Union Pacific train on page 18 were taken. We stayed overnight and returned for a few hours in the morning before continuing on to the coast. This is where Kathy fell in love with trains and the rail world! On the way home, George said, "I want to go back." The "wheels" in our heads were turning and we spent the hours flying east across country roughing out a plan for a longer visit to California, including a return to Tehachapi. That second trip took place in April 2005 and we spent two days of a 17-day trip in Tehachapi. We returned six more times to our beloved mountain over the next five years; every trip brought new knowledge and more appreciation for this stunning place. On our third visit, during a wonderful morning at Allard, we started talking about what has become Tehachapi Today! Subsequently, we have become friends with the Enovijas and Jury families, thereby expanding our connection to this place beyond the steel rails.
Even during our short time visiting the Tehachapis we have seen many changes, which we hope to show you in this book. In our research of the area it was to our delight when we discovered that our book would be published during the centennial year of the town. As Tehachapi was incorporated in 1909, Tehachapi Today! will be introduced close to the time of the town's centennial!
It is our hope that this book will take you to some of the more remote, as well as the familiar places, for railfanning and give you a greater appreciation for the landscape, wildlife and history of this spectacular mountain pass. In addition to the detailed tour of the line, we have included some unusual events including the rough times when weather conditions or a derailment can challenge train operations.
We would like to acknowledge the following contributors without whose involvement in the form of photos, technical advice, and encouragement we would not have succeeded in providing a book of the highest quality: Ted Benson, Chris Burger, Les Combs, Mike Confalone, Carin & Ernie Enovijas, Donald & Ruby Foster, Brian Frierdich, Robert Hardy, Brian Jennison, Jim & Suzette Jury, Amanda Keddy, Angela Keddy, Bill & Marilynn Linley, Adam Lombardo, Don Marson, the entire staff at Penmor Lithographers, Roger Snyder, Dorothea Socea and many others who have crossed our paths through this endeavor. The credit for the photographs throughout the book will be italicized and the authors' initials will be used.
The direction of all trains will be referred to as northbound or southbound in accordance with the Union Pacific employees timetable. We hope you enjoy reading this book as much as we have enjoyed writing it.
