Introduction

This book is the fourth volume in the Great Bear Yesteryear Traction series. It complements our first volume '50s WEST' with many different locations, but with a few of the old favourite scenes, which no book on the South-West could arguably be without.

We start our journey at the old county town of Taunton, when the station abounded in splendid GWR signals and signal boxes. We then run through Somerset and cross into Devon at Whiteball, and then on to Exeter, calling at many locations on the way. Between Exeter and Plymouth, the line is covered in detail, and also the Heathfield and Paignton branches. We then travel between Plymouth and Penzance, calling at many of the branch lines. The period covered is from the mid 1970s until the 1990s, the heyday of many of the Classes featured in the book.
