To take this trip on an old-fashioned train, lean back in your chair and pretend that you are living over half a century ago. Close your eyes and try to set your imagination free!
The setting at the beginning of your trip is a small Southeastern mining town-Elkhorn City, Kentucky. You and your family are at the train station with tickets to Spartanburg, South Carolina.
A brief history of the magnificent Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railroad follows, as well as equally brief biographical sketches of the men who had the vision to give this railroad life. Read these sketches first and then, remembering what you have learned, and sit back, relax, and dream!
The train is due any minute: it will be a massive, smoking, puffing, clanking steam locomotive pulling twelve passenger cars, including an express car, a mail car, a dining car, eight coaches, and an observation car in the rear.
"Oops, I thought I heard its whistle!" you say.
To-o-o-t, to-o-o-t, to-o-o-t!
"Yep, that's it."
The giant steam locomotive pulls by the station and stops with a heavy screech at a point where incoming passengers can detrain and outgoing passengers can board. In just a few moments you will climb aboard this luxurious home-on-wheels and take a three-hundred mile ride through the beautiful mountains, hills and valleys of Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
The conductor in his blue suit and hard-billed cap stands at the steps of the train, assisting passengers to unload.
"There's the last one," you say, finally. "Now we can board!"
"All aboard for points south! "the Conductor yells a short time later.
You are first in line, and you grab your bags and head for the train. You hurry up the steps and down the asile, hoping there are vacant seats in the observation car on the rear. The flagman, also dressed in a dark suit and hard-billed cap, tells you that there are a few seats back there; you hurry on through the asiles. After finding seats and placing your bags in an overhead rack, you and your family occupy all the window seats available.
"All aboard!" the conductor yells a moment later, his final invitation. Up ahead, on the locomotive, the engineer answers with a T-o-o-t! T-o-o-t!
Now the train is moving; you are on your way. You will be riding for the next seven or eight hours at speeds up to fifty miles per hour. The best thing you can do is settle back and enjoy the scenery as the faithful machine winds and wends its way along.
You will pass through the Grand Canyon of the South, through coal mining towns and tunnels, over high bridges, through the Nolichuckey Gorge in Tennessee, over the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, and finally, through the flat, marshy lands of South Carolina to the end of the line!
