SOme corners are turned over
Many years ago, when I was still a youngster, I used to check the classified sections of local newspapers to learn what old or unusual cars happened to be for sale. Then I'd travel, by bus or streetcar, across my home town (Oakland, California), in order to look at . . . and draw a picture of . . . an old car.
By the 1960's, old and unusual cars had become valuable, and were disappearing fast . . . not into junkyards, but into the garages of enthusiastic collectors. In 1962, I was trying to sell a variety of comic features to newspaper syndicates, and as a bonus item I developed a once-a-week panel about old cars which I called Auto Album. Most editors weren't very interested in my comic strips, but some of them did like the old cars.
Early in 1966, I called on Lew Little and showed him my various cartoons. Little was the owner of a newspaper syndicate that distributed comic features and columns to newspapers. He told me that if I could draw eighteen new car pictures in two weeks, he'd take a chance on the feature and try selling it to newspapers. By working furiously, I got the pictures ready in eleven days.
The first newspaper release of Auto Album was on June 12,1966. It featured a 191 Chrysler Imperial (see page 68).
I have always tried to feature a wide variety of cars in Auto Album. There are readers who enjoy seeing the very early "antiques." Others prefer the expensive "classic" cars of the 1920's and 1930's. Some like foreign cars, and most readers are interested in unusual American models. Even cars that are not very old are often interesting to those who have owned or driven them. So, as my drawings continue to appear in newspapers, I do my best to meet the varied demands of the readers who are kind enough to write me and express their preferences.
I do hope you'll enjoy this book! I enjoyed putting it together.
