Swindon and Cheltenham are only 27 miles apart, but the railway connecting these two towns running via Gloucester is 44 miles in length in order to avoid impossibly steep gradients and lengthy tunnels.
Author Colin Maggs tells the full story of the Cheltenham and Great Western ( ebay does not allow you to put these two words together) Union Railway and traces its development from inception, through the planning and construction stages to its full opening in 1845 and the subsequent operation of the line up to the present day. Locomotives, engine sheds, train services and GWR bus services are all comprehensively described along with hitherto unpublished information regarding the GWR's first railmotor service which ran on the stretch between Chalford and Stonehouse. The branches to Cirencester and Tetbury, and an interesting chapter on the various mishaps and accidents which occurred on the line, are also included.
Drawing strongly on contemporary sources and illustrated with over 120 pictures, many of which have not been published before, this book provides an authoritative account of the history of this fascinating line.
