INTRODUCTION:
There is great geological variety from south to north in Sussex, but remarkable uniformity east to west. Inland from the holidaymaker's "Sussex-by-the-Sea" there is a Gravel bearing coastal plain (West Sussex only), followed, in order, by the Chalk of the South Downs, Lower Greensand, Gault Clay, Upper Greensand and the great mass of Wealden Clay, plus an isolated pocket of Gypsum in East Sussex.
Most of these were worthy of exploitation and the narrow gauge railway was the economic answer to the local transport problem. Nothing now remains except in private collections or the Amberley Working Museum. We make no apology for giving much space to this important collection, which no stuudent of the subject can afford to miss seeing.
We have not included any of the numerous miniature railways in this volume and hope that sufficient illustrations are forthcoming to enable us to produce one devoted to the smaller gauges. Also omitted are private railways; there is a substantial 2ft 6ins gauge one hidden at Bolney.
Finally, we must refer readers to the classic Industrial Railways of the South-East (Middleton Press) for other views of many of the lines included in the first part of this book.
