Transport was meagre and although the first railway promoters had put down their tracks across the county, these were usually taking the travelling public elsewhere: to the West of England or to the fashionable resorts on the South Coast and the fine scenery further east.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eMuch of Surrey was still largely rural and a variety of geological bands comprised the scenery. There were those intimate small valleys about which Cobbett talked, such as those of \"thyme and marjoram\" like those in the Caterham and Coulsdon area. On top of this there were sweeps of fine beech hangers above Gomshall and Abinger where the whole flank of the North Downs ridge turned bronze and yellow in the autumn. Many of the main lines were being laid at .that time and the engineers of the large companies found time running out as well as expenses clocking up as they and their navvies battled through the chalk, making penetration of different tunnels: Mickleham, Merstham, and later in that century Oxted. When the new Edwardian age arrived, speculation by financial institutions, property developers, banks, etc had by now turned to activity. Plots of land were acquired all over the deeper ring of Surrey countryside for the well-to-do to build their mock Tudor residences and for other development. By this time, the services provided by the railways through Surrey had polarised into the hands of the three major companies that became household names before the Railway Grouping of 1923. On the western side the London \u0026amp; South Western Railway used the magnificently engineered main line of Joseph Locke - the former London \u0026amp; Southampton route of the 1840s sweeping through the opulence of Surbiton, Weybridge and so on and then through deep cuttings to reach the military heaths around Pirbright and Brookwood. Probably, though, the main revenue was obtained by the London Brighton \u0026amp; South Coast Railway, which title adequately summarises its southern limits but takes no apparent account of the enormously heavy Outer London suburban traffic it carried, which had begun to spread relentlessly southwards to many suburban homesteads. The most important route through Surrey which the South Eastern \u0026amp; Chatham Railway, the other company, controlled was from Reading (Berks) into Surrey via Ash and Crowthorne, thence to Guildford and from there to Redhill and the Brighton line. If you, as a traveller, could suffer a considerable wait at Redhill, a fresh engine would couple up at the other end of the train and you would take the original SECR route out to Ton-bridge, the Surrey interest finishing down the line at the obscure but delightfully rurally Crowhurst. The company and its neighbour the LBSCR often waged a bitter war of attrition and it is therefore more than surprising how much running power the SECR managed to exact from the Brighton.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAs the Twentieth Century got into its Edwardian stride, pressure grew from the travelling public for a speedier and more punctual service than the old warring pre-grouping companies were able to give. After the important Railway Grouping of 1923, the Southern Railway (as the three companies had now become) decided with little hesitation to put in hand an extensive programme of electrification to ward off the growing competition from road traffic.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThis aspect of electrification produces the inevitable twist for anyone compiling a record of steam in Surrey. At the period which this book covers (1951-1961) there were very few all-steam lines left. The Reading-Tonbridge, Guildford-Horsham and Oxted group of lines were almost all that were available for the keen recorder to study.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eNot that this was in any way a drawback. Even in the late 1950s one's memories were of spanking along at considerable speed between Lingfield and Hurst Green Halt on that undulating stretch behind a Wainwright H tank built some forty years earlier, with the setting sun from the west picking out, in the compartment of the SECR bird-cage set, the high buttoned back upholstery, the elaborate luggage rack supports with SECR woven in cast-iron, plus the inevitably long illustrations from places west - Ilfracombe, Mortehoe and many more. There would be a recurring musical accompaniment, always rising in a crescendo when the push-pull set pitched into a down grade and the axle boxes gave an account of themselves. Up at the front end, the ever-sprightly 0-4-4T locomotive gave of her all to make up for the over-indulgent water stop at East Grinstead.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThere were other times too when the afternoon summer heat. hammered on the platforms at Godstone and all was quiet until the signalman pulled a lever in his signalbox and the arm on the post of the tall home signal (ex-SECR) would droop and denote the approach of one of the cross-country expresses. In the distance, up the wavering heat-lines towards Nutfield Tunnel, shortly a shape would start to form like a mirage. The train would soon indicate its presence - by a short toot on the whistle. Would it be one of Margate's Schools or one of the new Standard 2-6-0s or even a Bulleid pacific? The whole ensemble of twelve corridors (Southern and GWR) roars past and everything reverts to quietness.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eWithin a relatively short time the bell rings again with the same routine repeated but, this time, trailing in the wake of the express, is a mundane cavalcade - the 3.28 p.m. RedhillTonbridge with a Wainwright L 4-4-0 at the head of a SECR composite set of coaches with no corridor and with bird-cage each end.
