When jet aircraft replaced the likes of DC-3s and rumbling Constellations, and when the sprawl of the superhighway spread from its American birthplace to much of the rest of the world, there were those who predicted the imminent end of passenger railway service.  That prophecy came close to realization in the United States, and presented a very real threat and challenge to railways in al of the industrialized world.
Fortunately for those of us who think that a world without railways would lbe a dull one indeed, there was a sufficient number of far seeing railway managers who responded to the challenge.  They saw that the only way to compete effectively with airlines and automobiles was to provide fast and luxurious service.  The result of these efforts are the supertrains.
Just what is a supertrain? I define a super train as one that is incredibly fast, lavisly luxurious or possesses various combinations of these two qualities.  Of course, not everyone will agree with my  inclusions and some will be annoyed with my exclusions. And there is always the possibility of a train rising to super train contention after this book has been published.  The Blue Train of South Africa, for example is not at al fast, but it could well be the most luxurious train in the world.  Thus it is included here as a super train.  Similarly, the Orient Express is outdated by today's standards, but the luxury and legend surrounding this train accord it a special status.
The future of train travel is still uncertain.  However, many of the trains discussed in this book represent the best hope of trains continuing to run i the next century and beyond.
