This book on Super Chief and the El Capitan takes a look at part of the transcontinental services that had been offered by the Santa Fe Railway. There is much to learn from the Santa Fe passenger services, and much of which could be, and should be, applied to the concept of transcontinental passenger services in the 21st Century.
Such train services are needed not only for the intermediate travel for people in a wide variety of cities and town across the country, but also for a period of relaxation and travel across America. When one thinks about it, the two-night-and-one-day travel actually adds "a day" to one's life in this high speed, hectic world as it provides an opportunity to rejuvenate, which in turn creates a mental modality for greater productivity with less stress.
We will take a look at the All-Pullman Super Chief and the All Chair Car El Capitan, and the type of services each train provided the traveling public. This includes train schedules, equipment, action shots of the trains en route between Chicago and Los Angeles, and well as the many onboard services provided for passengers. The book finishes up by taking a look at the Amtrak's Southwest Chief, which operates over much of the same route 1 as the Super Chief and the El Capitan. It is also interesting to note that the Amtrak Superliner cars were designed based on the Hi-Level equipment of the El Capitan, as well as the fact that Hi-Level cars were still operating on a variety of trains in the 21st Century. Just one example is the Heartland Flyer.

We hope that it will bring back memories of a superb travel concept and ideas for modeling the Super Chief and the El Capitan for one's hobby from Walthers, Inc. and Train Station Products. Furthermore, it is hoped that the book will provide some information about how we can operate transcontinental trains as part of our total transportation system in the 21st Century. Fortunately we can still travel on most of the original AT&SF trackage between Chicago and Los Angeles on the Southwest Chief.
