INTRODUCTION
Two years ago when volume one of Sunset on the Rio Grande Southern was released at the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Durango, several individuals expressed an interest in the projected content for volume two. It was through these conversations, along with much encouragement, that a final plan evolved for this project.
The Rio Grande Southern Railroad continues to come to life through the pages of publications already in print or perhaps planned in the future. It is no wonder that this line maintains a special interest in the hearts of railroad enthusiasts. Focusing in several different areas, it has been my intention to cover specifics not generally rendered by other authors.
Motive power is not an original subject, however, as a part of the equipment of the railroad, there is a need to include it within these pages. This, along with other rolling stock, as well as some maintenance equipment is included to provide the proper atmosphere of that important area for this unique narrow gauge railroad.
At Durango many model railroaders stressed a need for more details and photographic illustrations relating to the facilities of the RGS. A concerted effort has been made to cover as many of these structures as possible based upon availability of material.
Publications most generally do not include engineering details such as track data, rail weights, locations, etc. This information is available in this book.
Passenger excursion movements started in 1946 and continued into the last months of operation. Operating conditions on the RGS were not easy and often times the excursion experienced unusual circumstances, typical RGS days, as outlined in text during these movements. Because of these movements, some revenue was generated for the railroad.
Inclusion of interesting messages and letters provide the reader a small insight of daily practices in running a railroad. The accident file itself give the readers firsthand knowledge in derailment problems which continually plagued the road nearly to its last day of operation.
Sadly, the final sunset in this volume of Sunset on the Rio Grande Southern depicts the end of the line. That fateful moment when, the first rails were pulled up, never again will trains run, they are gone forever. While bleak to look back on, one must realize The Rio Grande Southern Railroad was no exception, as many other railroad lines before and after have met a similar fate. It is the same old tune. It takes revenue (money) to survive.
This volume is a combination of accurate data and facts from many hours of research covering those final years for The Rio Grande Southern Railroad. The author has attempted to gather material for this volume which will not duplicate, but supplement, volume one.
It was not always possible, but the author's primary goal has been to select unpublished photographs representing the railroad or location, along with quality and accuracy of detail.
Design and layout intentionally provides as large of an image as possible in the available space. Where quality of original photos were from small images it was not always possible to enlarge those views.
Every effort has been made to present as much of a variety in the materials and photographs currently available to the author.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
