DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Lucius Beebe once described Southern Pacific's legendary Sunset Limited as "a starred name in the roll call of luxury transport." Down through the decades, from the glory days of the 1890s, through the standard era of the 1920s, and despite the attention, publicity and fine equipment once lavished on other transcontinental trains the Sunset Limited remained the top train of SP corporate affections perhaps because, while other trains shared their runs with other carriers, the Sunset rolled entirely on Southern Pacific rails from California to New Orleans. No expense was spared on the Budd-built streamlined Sunset Limited of 1950, a train which to this day is widely regarded as representative of the zenith of passenger train development in this country. By the late 1960s, when Southern Pacific, along with the rest of the nation's freight railroads, was aggressively abandoning its passenger trains, the Sunset became a lightning rod for public opinion and governmental review. In the end, months before the advent of Amtrak, a compromise was reached where the Sunset was reduced to triweekly service, but full Diner, Lounge and Sleeping car service was restored-closing out its service life with Southern Pacific with a modicum of dignity. Today, more than a century after it was first introduced, Amtrak still operates a Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles.
Lavishly illustrated with photographs, menus, advertising and other ephemera, this is the complete story of the Sunset Limited, the train that was created to cater to the moneyed elite of the gilded age, that went on to become the backbone of premier passenger service over the Sunset Route and in so doing helped to define all that once was Southern Pacific-the West's greatest transportation system.
