In the history of public transportation companies in America, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company (BRT) and its successor the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) is one of the most significant. The forces of history near the end of the 19th Century required this already large traction holding company to transform itself into an operator of a prominent New York Subway system. This great accomplishment would be in itself a major achievement, but the company and men who accomplished this effort would go forth to become a motivation in the science of modern urban rapid transit. They had a deep devotion to public transportation and in their work were able to encompass imagination, science, and common sense to create a successful rapid transit system. Because of this work they would not only change their own system but systems the world over. Even in a time of great national darkness, the Great Depression, they steered their enterprise toward the light of the future. While other systems re-ordered the same outdated designs decade after decade the, BRT/BMT management created new rolling stock every decade. They also examined the best methods of scheduling, signaling, track design, and operations to achieve the optimum service success. The new rolling stock built not only upgraded the service from the equipment before but fine-tuned the existing operation into a more productive and responsible operation.
Sadly after unification with the other systems by the City of New York, the BRT/BMT's established principles would be suspended. The philosophy adopted would be mediocre, large fleets of outdated cars with few innovative features. The subway car became a box to haul people. Nearly three decades would pass before the public began to demand better. To this day the BRT/BMT history is a lesson in understanding what good public transportation requires. Only recently has there been a resurgence into the type of thinking common to the BMT The modular articulated light rail equipment in use in Europe and America has roots in the light weight rolling stock of the BMT in the 1930s. The BMT was able to turn inward to a little group of superb, imaginative men who created a whole system and changed our ideas of rapid transit that influences us to this very day.
Through knowing their work I have always been instructed, and inspired in my efforts to providing good public transportation My hope is that this book illuminates and inspires others of their methods and achievements, for their work made it clear to me, that public transportation can come close to becoming an art.
