More than two decades ago sportscaster Stan Fischler let the cat out of the bag.
The veteran television and print hockey analyst also was a train buff. This was forever revealed in his history of the New York subways and els, UPTOWN, DOWNTOWN.
Fischler, otherwise known to New York sports fans as "The Hockey Maven' produced the all-time best seller among books with a transit bent. Written in his typically humanistic style, Stan brought the Big Apple's underground to life for readers who were not necessarily aficionados of the subject.
Many changes have altered the Gotham subways since Fischler's original work. After years of demands for a reissue, Stan has revised and expanded his classic work with a new version with many more fascinating photographs and new stories.
In preparation for this new volume, Fischler has travelled to the nether reaches of the system, including the closed City Hall station (on the front cover of the dust jacket) to the unfinished depths of the Second Avenue subway. Not to mention his discovery-near the Grand Central Shuttle Station-of the opening used by the subway's original owner, August Belmont, to access his private car, Mineola.
