INTRODUCTION

Create a realistic layout for your model railroad with the revolutionary SubTerrain System. This System includes high-density foam and all of the tools and accessories you will need. SubTerrain is extremely adaptable and expandable to your plans.

Building a layout with The SubTerrain System is extremely simple. It is also completely different from older methods of building model railroads. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the entire process before beginning to use the SubTerrain System. Read through the entire book; then go back and follow the instructions step-by-step while you build your own model railroad.

Before You Begin

Before creating a model railroad, there are a few preparations to make. First you need a plan. A wide variety of track plans are available. Many magazines, books and other publications feature track plans. See our track plan in the Appendix or you can create your own plan. The photography throughout this book and in the SubTerrain video refer to the track plan found in the Appendix.

SubTerrain is adaptable to any track plan, most scales and any type of track. The examples in this book use rigid sectional track, but SubTerrain works equally well with flexible track.

Once you have selected a suitable plan, transfer it to your base. In most circumstances, a sheet of plywood makes an adequate base. Simply lay out track on base and trace around it or draw on base.
