In the spring of 1863, Union colonel Abel D. Streight sought to raid and destroy parts of the Western & Atlantic Railroad in north Georgia with his mule-riding brigade. Determined to thwart the potentially deadly attack, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest relentlessly pursued Streight's force. With the help of an unlikely ally, fifteen-year-old Emma Sansom of Gadsden, Alabama, Forrest stayed close on Streight's trail. At Cedar Bluff, Alabama, Forrest bluffed Streight into surrendering to his much smaller force. Brandon H. Beck details Streight's dubious plan and the exciting story of the running battle between hunter and hunted across Alabama and almost into the heart of Georgia.
