Compilation of Volume II was no less easy than the first volume, although the outline and much of the data had been accomplished by the publication of E. Harper Charlton's "Street Railways of New Orleans" in 1955. Many of the dates in the earlier work had to be verified, and many necessary dates not appearing in that work had to be painstakingly researched. There were, regrettably, some errors in "Street Railways of New Orleans" that this volume rectifies. Also, there is a wealth of totally new data appearing in this volume. Most of the photos are different ones from those that appeared in Charlton's 1955 work. Practically a new book had to be written and constructed but the foundation had been securely laid in 1955.
Again, illness in the family and other problems curtailed Charlton's research activities. Most of the "leg work" and research was done by Hennick, as well as the actual writing of pages. Photos were difficult to ferret out of the usual vague tangles which they seem to inhabit. However, the authors were fortunate in finding photos of equipment that did not appear in the 1955 book. There are much better car plans and maps this time, also.
The libraries of Centenary College, City of New Orleans, Louisiana State Museum, Louisiana State University, New York City, Philadelphia Free Library, St. Mary's Dominican College, and Tulane University provided all of the newspaper files and traction publications mentioned in the Bibliography, as well as most of the source-publications listed therein.
The City Engineering Department permitted us to use their 1925 New Orleans map, for which we are most grateful. Ordinance data from Clerk of Court and City Library.
