Street railways represent one of the most interesting and colorful chapters in the growth and development of Louisiana's urban areas.
This heavily illustrated volume, written by the two leading authorities in the field, carefully and accurately delineates the evolution of interurban railways and electric and animal traction in Louisiana cities, beginning shortly after the'Civil War and continuing through the first third of the Twentieth Century.

He is widely known for articles that have appeared in Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Bulletins, Trains, Railroad Magazine, and The Modern Tramway.
Louis Hennick has spent many years studying and collecting data, photographs, timetables, and other historical material relating to railroads and electric railways.
Authors Hennick and Charlton also have collaborated on a companion volume to this work, The Streetcars of New Orleans, reprinted by Pelican Publishing Company in 1975.
