Street railways have been running in the United States for the past 150 years, from horsecars to modern light rail vehicles. By the beginning of this century, elevateds, subways and interurban railways were in operation. During the past century and a half a vast quantity of books, pamphlets, and articles has appeared about the subject, most notably around 1900 when the "traction topic" was an important social and economic issue in the larger cities. The following bibliography provides a listing of some of this vast literature.
It is selective because a complete and comprehensive bibliography is beyond the scope of a single volume. The emphasis is on titles which present the history of various street, interurban, and rapid transit systems in the United States. Titles which describe track and right-of-way, structures, new cars, and purely economic matters have been excluded unless they include basic system data, or form part of a larger series. Five major types of material are listed:
1. Books and bulletins providing at least a partial history of various systems, usually written many years after the systems have ceased operations.
2. Articles in fan-type railroad magazines devoted to system histories.
3. Articles in contemporary journals which described the systems while still in operation.
4. Annual statistical volumes issued by various national and state agencies, or economic journals or organizations.
