With their striking modernist styling, technological aspirations and famous record-breaking runs, Britain's streamlined expresses of the I 930s reflected the spirit of their age.
In 1935 the London and North Eastern Railway introduced a new express service between King's Cross and Newcastle called the Silver Jubilee. It was a steam-hauled streamlined train, completing the journey in just four hours, at an average speed of 67mph. With its silver-grey coaching stock and locomotive of unprecedented appearance, it marked the beginning of an all-too-brief era when both LNER and LMS companies operated streamlined expresses on their networks in what many rail enthusiasts have come to regard as the Golden Age of Steam.
But was it? Until now, no other book has ever examined this fascinating period of railway history. Now, for the first time, Streamlined Steam draws on previously undiscovered company archives and unique crewmen's recollections to present the inside story of the streamlined expresses. Behind the glamour of luxury accommodation, cocktail bars and observation lounges lay a grimmer reality: the lack of training for the engine crews, their reliance on semaphore signalling designed for a previous generation's railway, the appalling stoking rates required, the horror Of repairing firebox problems between services before the locomotive was properly cool.
This book shows how British luxury trains of the I 935-9 period were far too improvisatory in nature, failing to utilise modern technology in construction and crew training. Their success - for they were highly profitable - was largely due to the loyalty of the railways' staff and their determination to bring excitement back into British railway operation.
