The latter achievement was the 'brainchild' of a Cornish pumping machinery engineer, Richard Trevithick, who had demonstrated a steam carriage in London during the first years of the century. Trevithick was retained by Samuel Homfray, the owner of the Pen-y-Darren iron works in South Wales, where he adapted a stationary steam engine for use on the works track which was, in fact, a plateway. This event occurred on 13 February 1804 and the crude machine won Homfray a wager of 500 guineas.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eBy that date railways had been in use, mainly in mining areas, for  nearly 50 years. Indeed horsedrawn carts had been pulled along angled iron plates at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire in 1767. Unfortunately for Trevithick (and any immediate recognition and progress), the iron plates shattered under the locomotive's weight and it returned to its originally intended duties as a stationary engine.
