The Story of the Sydenham to Botany Railway Offal Oil & Overseas Trade By Neville Pollard Soft Cover 1988 New South Wales Division Australian Railway Historical Society  56 pages.  Photos.  Maps.
We can learn a great deal about an area through a study of its railway. The Botany line in the south eastern suburbs of Sydney is only a little over sixty years old but in that fairly short time it has done much to shape the character of the surrounding landscape.
In the opening years of the twentieth century the focus was on a relatively abundant water supply which drew wool scourers and tanners to Botany in large numbers. Very soon afterwards came Bunnerong Power Station on the shores of Botany Bay. The fifties saw the state's insatiable thirst for oil and petroleum satisfied by the construction of refineries in the district and the development of Cooks River goods yard as one of the busiest in the metropolitan area. More recently has come the growth of Port Botany, the second port of Sydney.
This book tells the story of the railway's role in the development of the wider Botany area.
