This line, 45 miles in length, operates in northeastern Pennsylvania and at one time it served the richest coal and timber regions in this part of the country. It is today, unlike many short lines, a sort of connecting link between its trunk line connections. The line starts at Towanda, where it connects with the Lehigh Valley and from there its 80 pound rails climb through what is known as the South Mountain range of the Alleghenies. At Ellen-ton, about 30 miles out of Towanda, the road reaches its highest elevation-more than 2,100 feet above sea level. From this point the road drops down the heavy grade on the south slope of the South Mountain range for 14 miles into Marsh Hill Junction, where it joins the Elmira Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Trackage rights over that road for 20 miles into West Williamsport gives the S. & N.Y. connections with the Reading and the New York Central.
