The early railroads of New England were pioneers in the development of our vast network of railroads, Boston, the commercial center of New England, saw many lines radiate from her boundaries, As time passed these lines have been consolidated into three railroads, One of the earliest of these was the Old Colony. From a small road, scarce fifty miles in length, this road (with its steamship lines included) grew to a total mileage of nearly one thousand. This system, because of its associates, will never be forgotten by the New Englander, particularly if his home is in Southern Massachusetts.
To handle the subject with the justice it deserves, has been a long, laborious task, but one that has been greatly alleviated by the genuine interest shown by others in the preparation of this work, The Old Colony is worthy of every effort that the author can make, and he hopes that his readers will find enjoyment in its pages, The greatest of care and pains has been used and the best sources have been consulted,

The history of the Old Colony Railroad, here presented, forms an addition to the very few books which have been written about our Massachusetts railroads. Those who were the incorporators and who gave the Old Colony Railroad its name builded better than they knew for they could not have selected a name more appropriate to the territory it covered. That very name, as solid as Plymouth Rock, stood, and always will stand, for all that is upright, honorable and progressive in railroading, It is now twenty-five years since the Old Colony ceased to be an active corporation. The men who ran its trains and manned its locomotives, have passed the summit and are on the descending grade.
