The Story of the California Western Skunk Railroad By Spencer Crump Redwoods, Iron Horses and the Pacific Dust Jacket 1963 FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. DSUT JACKET is covered with plastic
The California Western Railroad stretches from the Pacific Coast at Fort Bragg through miles of redwoods to Willits, winding through the mountains and crossing and re-crossing the beautiful Noyo River. The railroad began as a logging line, but achieved its greatest fame during recent years through use of picturesque rail buses given the affectionate "Skunk" nickname.
"Redwoods, Iron Horses, and The Pacific: The Story of the California Western 'Skunk' Railroad" traces the line's beginning and tells how it was pushed through the rugged redwood country. Steam locomotives first reigned on the railroad and carried timber products, passenger coaches and even Pullmans.
The book tells how acquisition of the initial Skunk rail bus first brought skepticism from passengers and trainmen alike. But the Skunk triumphed and was hailed.
The California Western in 1963 acquired the fourth member of its Skunk family - making the CWR one of the few railroads in America that expanded passenger service at a time when other lines were reducing schedules.
The book's 35,000-word text is supplemented by more than 150 illustrations, including maps and photographs of the steam locomotives and passenger cars as well as the famed Skunks.
The California Western opened its files to author Spencer Crump, providing much data and pictures never before published. In addition, the author's research included use of historical records at the Bancroft Library, the University of California, Berkeley, and other libraries in the San Francisco Bay area.
Intended for the general reader as well as the connoisseur of railroad history, "Redwoods, Iron Horses, and The Pacific" contains interesting accounts of the redwoods, logging, and the beautiful Mendocino coast. It is a must for the collectors of Californiana.
An appendix section includes builder's drawings of all four Skunk rail buses and a roster of CWR locomotives - past and present.
The book also includes a suggested model train layout utilizing the California Western theme.
