It has been a long time since street cars dominated our downtown streets and interurban trams threaded their way out to the suburbs and beyond. To my friend Henry and me, and the thousands who rode them, they are not forgotten. Who can ever forget riding the number 10 or 11 cars to the big, crowded loop at Stanley Park on a hot summer's Sunday? The cars seemed to possess a quality which causes them to linger with affection in our memories.
The street cars and trams were imposing and efficient. They were also colourful. Although they no longer grace our cities and landscapes, they are fully deserving of the dignity and respect a book confers on them.
This volume appropriately fills a significant void and appears at an opportune time. -
It celebrates the British Columbia Electric Railway's street cars and trams not only in the year of Vancouver's centenary but also in conjunction with Expo 86, the World's Fair dedicated to transportation and technology.
