ON THE BACK COVER
FROM GEORGE STEPHENSON'S Blücher to the Coronation is a very
far cry, and the developments during the one and a quarter centuries between
are an engrossing history. This volume depicts the pioneering of the steam
locomotive, and the gradual formation and linking up of the big trunk
lines—complicated in the West by the " Battle of the Gauges
"—culminating in the formation of the " Big Four " after the
1914-18 war.
The construction of locomotives and rolling stock, the
laying of the permanent way, the operation of marshalling yards and many other
railway activities have been described in their appropriate order.
Nearly 300 half-tone illustrations grace this handsome and
exhaustive history of the Railways, and 24 colour illustrations have been
specially executed by Mr. Sydney Oborne, of veteran engines in their correct
livery as well as modern locomotive giants.
WITH the end of the European War and also the close of the first twenty-one years' existence of the railways of this island as the " big four," British Railways enter upon a new era. The present time is accordingly an opportune moment to survey the progress of the past.
Still more rapid progress has been promised for the next twenty-five years, and it is not beyond the bounds of feasibility that the "big four" may even sink their separate identities into one vast transport organisation, serving Great Britain by road, rail, sea and air.
No story of British Railways would be complete without a brief record of the way in which railwaymen in this country kept going "the lines behind the lines" during the war, of the manner in which they kept open the channels of communication despite the constant perils of aerial attack. Since this book was written before the close of the European conflict, much of the description of war-time operation is in the present tense instead of in the past.
In the limited space available, it has been possible to do no more than give a very rough sketch of the progress and development of the railways, but it is the author's hope that this Story of British Railways may prove of interest to the ever-increasing number of railway lovers, and that it may thrill younger enthusiasts with the mighty triumphs of bygone days and arouse their anticipation of still greater future achievements in the war against time and space.
If I may be allowed to make any dedication of this book, let it be to the memory of the railway workers, who, from 1939 to 1945, stood unflinchingly at their posts in keeping safe the nation's arteries-her railways.
