The Story of British Railway Engines by P A Purton Soft Cover 26 Pages  INCLUDES the cardboard model of the Southern Raiwlay Royal Mail MErchant Navy Class.
The first railway engine ever built was Trevithick's " Locomotive," which was at work hauling coal at a colliery in1803. Trevithick, a Cornishman, was a very clever inventor and his railway engines were quite successful, being capable of hauling fifteen tons at five miles an hour. The latest and most powerful locomotives in use at the present day, such as the
Southern Railway's " Merchant Navy " class engines, can haul a load of 527 tons at 74 miles an hour, but Trevithick's " Locomotive " was, in a sense, the greatest of all railway engines, for its main principles have been used in every steam locomotive ever since.
Trevithick's " Locomotive " had, of course, a fire-box and boiler. It had a cylinder and piston, and a simple and efficient slide-valve to let the steam into and out of the cylinder. It turned the used steam into the funnel to increase draught, and Trevithick even fitted a small pump to keep the boiler supplied with water while running.
