After early experimentation, the first regularly scheduled passenger train in America made its first run in South Carolina on Christmas morning, 1830, behind a locomotive picturesquely named the "Best Friend of Charleston." The story from that day is all here-the improvements of engines and cars, tracks and signal systems; the laying of lines through wilderness, across rivers, and under mountains; the crucial role of railroads in the Civil War; the triumph when a thousand miles of new track spanning the prairie west from Nebraska and seven hundred miles east from the Pacific across the Sierra Nevada were joined in Utah on May 10, 1869 - one hundred years ago; the peopling of the mid-continent; the hauling of freight and mail; the special trains for mining and other tasks; the tragic accidents and the heroes who prevented others; the train robberies; the golden age when trains dominated all travel; today's campaign to save passenger trains from extinction in the face of airline competition.
The colorful text is illustrated with a profusion of drawings and photographs.
