WESTBOUND TRAVELERS generally consider the expansive Colorado prairie to be a barren, largely unsettled barrier to Rocky Mountain splendor. I confess that similar feelings dogged me during my younger days. Childhood vacations by automobile from my Vermont home - when my dad and mom shared duty for the two-day driving marathon - imprinted endless flatlands, wheat fields and grain elevators on my brain. We kids occupied ourselves in the back seat with toys, such as EtchA-Sketch, coloring books, and a little game counting the seemingly endless parade of tractor-trailers that passed us on the freeway.
How did a native Vermonter and Colorado transplant fall in love with the prairie? It began with a flexible work schedule and the purchase of a reliable automobile. I first visited many of the well-documented mountain places, and walked or drove most of the ubiquitous abandoned narrow-gauge routes that once crossed the Rockies. A chance visit to a friend's home in a former railroad section house, once owned by the Denver & New Orleans Railroad, led to my writing a book about that abandoned railroad (published by Sundance Publications in 1997). I marveled at the unpublished material that came my way. The loving, laid-back people I befriended as a result of my research had fascinating stories to tell. Some became extended family. I was hooked on the prairie lifestyle. It became an obsession to seek out the obscure, document it and share my discoveries.
