Here in a magnificent photographic essay, is the complete story of one of Americas most unusual railroads, whose operations include far flung steamboat and ferry services and whose roadbed runs from the black tubes under the East River to the sandy wilderness of Montauk,
Introduction
From the inception of Steel Rails to the Sunrise, I have watched the book slowly take shape, and have never ceased to be amazed at the quality and scope of the material. I have viewed this both as a rail enthusiast and as an author, having coauthored, with Frederick H. Richardson, Along the Iron Trail (Tuttle Publishing Company, 1938). My earliest recollections of steam railroading go back to the days when Richardson and I cut classes to watch the fast express trains on the Providence Division of the New York, New Haven & Hartford R.R.
I first met Ron Ziel while he was putting together his outstanding book, The Twilight of Steam Locomotives, and I was reminded of my own experiences with Mr. Richardson when we gambled on a book that would interest rail enthusiasts.
George and Ron have excelled in their new accomplishment. Striking pictures like this one of the LIRR have not been seen previously. Discovering and ferreting out historic unpublished photographs of this quality to tell the story of this interesting railroad, steeped in history and controversy since its inception, is truly a unique achievement. This book is not just a compilation of railroad motive power, but shows all the facets of railroading from stations to local color, and in addition presents seldom-published facts on the LIRR's fleet of ships. Since the paternal side of my family settled on Long Island and sailed their own packets up to Cape Cod, the two chapters devoted to the nautical aspect of the railroad's activities interested me greatly.
I recall the time in 1946 when Fred Richardson and I, flying an ancient Waco biplane, were forced down in central Long Island by a fast snow front. We hastened to head for New York City via the LIRR, and when a formidable Ten-Wheeler pulled into the small station in a swirl of snow, smoke, and steam my appreciation rose anew for "Old Reliable." A couple of days later we steamed back to this same station and took to the air again, and soon afterward, at 90 mph, we were chasing our departed train on its 50 mph dash to Greenport.
This book reminds me again of those fondly recalled days, and I am sure it will be frequently consulted, not only by the fully informed rail enthusiast, but by everyone who is interested in the history of Long Island.
