The Steel Highway By Cecil Allen Hard Cover 1928 with 8 colored plates and illustrations from photos  276 Pages  Part 1 Railway making and planning, Part 2 Trains and their control.
OF the making of "railway books" there is no end. But is this surprising? Could any other business organisation be named which covers so vast a diversity of interests as does the railway ? Is there any other means of transport, indeed, which exercises so peculiar a fascination over young and old as the railway ? Round the latest locomotive, as it stands at the terminus, may be found unceasingly a circle of devotees including, perhaps, some who might, from the nature of their callings, be thought incapable of concealing such affections within their breasts. The newest nonstop express will be " seen off," day after day, and followed with straining gaze until out of sight, by a devoted band of well-wishers. And even those who are too deeply immersed in the major affairs of life to be found in such company will admit, many of them, that the lure of the locomotive and the thrill of the flying express are sensations that even advancing years do not permit them to shake off.
Although the railway has found him an occupation for a quarter of a century past, the author has to confess that in his own case the railway enthusiasms of years gone by are no whit less potent to-day. It is the purpose of this volume to attempt to communicate some of this peculiar fascination of the railway to those who read. But it is of great importance that sensation shall not be a substitute for accuracy, as has been the case with some of the railway books of the past. In the course of the twenty-five years just mentioned, it has fallen to the author to cover in railway trains a distance of some 800,000 miles in various countries, so that he is in a position to describe many of the wonders of railway engineering which figure in the book from the viewpoint of an eyewitness.
It is in this eye-witness role that he seeks to conduct the reader through the planning of the railways, showing the influence that Nature has exercised over railway routes the world over ; then he follows on with the laying of the tracks and their equipment for the traffic that they are to carry ; together the writer and the reader witness the building of a modern locomotive, follow it to the stable at which it is cared for, and travel with its crew over a day's journey ; rolling stock is reviewed, trains and the much-discussed subject of railway speeds are dealt with ; freight is handled ; the methods of controlling the trains and every other factor bearing on safety of operation are described. Endeavouring in this way to supply answers to the " whys " and the " hows " of the railway enthusiast, and even of the reader in whom a real love of the railway still awaits birth, the author has tried to clothe the dry bones of his technical facts with some of the deep personal interest of a railwayman in the railway and all its works. To what extent he has succeeded the reader must be left to judge for himself.
