PREFACE
The use of water has reached large proportions and rapidly is increasing. Many storage reservoirs are being built for potable water supply, irrigation, and flood control. Rivers are being canalized for navigation and dammed for the development of power. Such improvements require the construction of many dams and have directed attention anew to the design of all types of masonry and concrete dams, and many researches have been made, and papers and articles written, which deal with all phases of this subject.
The use of steel in new types of construction has received much study during recent years. There has been a continuous improvement in the processes of its manufacture and fabrication, many new alloys have been developed, and the relatively new art of fusion welding has directed attention to the economical use of steel in new applications.
During this period of development, the use of steel as a suitable and economical material for the construction of fixed dams has received little attention. It has been used freely and satisfactorily for movable dams of all types for many years, but for about thirty years it has been almost ignored in connection with fixed dams. Long ago a few fixed steel dams were built which now are in excellent condition.
This little book was written in order to review a few of the applications of steel to fixed dams and to indicate some of the methods of design and the suitability of steel for such structures. At a time of intensive study and research into the best and most economical use of the various materials of construction, it is hoped that the advantages of steel in the construction of fixed dams will not be overlooked.
