The side-wheeler Ancon was one of a fleet of California ships plying from San Diego to Alaska in the 1860's . . . the Fairy started service in Puget Sound in 1953. . . with excited throngs on the San Francisco waterfront cheering 250 adventurous passengers, the 3,728 ton Colorado moved bravely out of the bay bound for the Orient . . . and in January, 1906, the Valencia crashed on Vancouver Island rocks in one of the worst sea tragedies on the Coast.
With these incidents and a hundred more before and later, detailed in sea-fashion by a man with sea-sense, a fascinating history of Pacific Coast ships is unfolded. Author Benson covers the ferries too, of yesterday and today, in San Francisco Bay, Puget Sound and British Columbia . . . including, as with other ships, class, speed, power, descriptions of quarters and engine rooms. Couple all this with a profusion of fine photographs, historic and modern. To stand on the pierhead and watch great liners like the United States and Canberra being warped into the slip is a thrilling experience . . . but the man who loves the sea and all that lies on it and in it, can narrow his gaze, look toward the blue horizon and picture the Lot Whitcomb churning up the Sacramento River or the Portland arriving in Seattle with a ton of Alaskan gold.
