INTRODUCTION
Lincoln County finds itself bordered on its eastern boundary by the Coast Range and on its western side by the mighty Pacific Ocean. Today these two geographic features provide most of the lifeblood for this county, but in the earlier years they acted as a formidable barrier against its early development.
Railroads were being built along the Columbia River and down the Willamette Valley, southward from Portland. But it took an extra effort and a previously unforeseen dedication to push the twin ribbons of steel over the mountains and westward towards the bays and the ocean they emptied into.
Some of the tracks that were laid down in this country were done so as part of a large transcontinental railroad system while others were built only as short, temporary spurs to haul rock and logs. All of these lines, however, had a common denominator in that each and every one of them played an important role in the development of the county as we know it today.
So sit back now and enjoy an exciting trip back through the heyday of railroad building in this rich land we know as Lincoln County, Oregon.
